Discover Thatharna Trek: Dharamshala’s Hidden Himalayan View

When people visit Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, the most popular treks usually mentioned are Triund Trek, Snowline Trek, and Kareri Lake Trek.

However, during my recent trip, I discovered a lesser-known but incredibly rewarding trail — the Thatharna Trek.

If you are looking for a short, peaceful trek with breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar mountains, this hidden trail is definitely worth exploring.

Where is Thatharna Trek?

The Thatharna Trek begins from Kharota village, located near Dharamshala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

It is a short 5 km trek that usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on your pace.

Unlike crowded trekking routes, Thatharna offers peaceful surroundings and panoramic mountain views.

Starting the Trek from Kharota Village

We started our trek at 10:15 AM from Kharota village.

The starting point of the Thatharna Trek at Kharota village. There is enough space to park vehicles before beginning the hike toward the mountains.

The initial section of the trail has fewer trees and is more open. During summer this stretch can feel warm, so it’s best to start the trek early in the morning.

Within the first five minutes of the trek, you come across a small temple along the trail. Many trekkers stop here briefly before continuing the climb.

The initial section of the trail has fewer trees, which means it can get warm during peak summer afternoons. Fortunately, we were trekking in the first week of March, so the weather was pleasant and comfortable.

This distinct yellow-marked pine tree serves as an important landmark for trekkers, indicating the early section of the Thatharna trail.

Near this point you can find a small water facility where trekkers can refill bottles before continuing the ascent.

Entering the Forest Section

After the initial stretch, the trail enters a shaded pine forest. The cool shade and fresh mountain air make this part of the trek especially enjoyable.

Gradual Uphill Trail

The trail gradually climbs uphill through the forest. The path is steady and manageable, making it suitable even for beginner trekkers.

Since we were walking slowly and taking breaks, it took us around three hours to reach the top, although many trekkers complete it in 1.5–2 hours.

A Stunning 360° View of the Dhauladhar Range

Around 1 PM, we finally reached the top — and the view was absolutely breathtaking.

The majestic Dhauladhar mountain range stood right in front of us, covered with snow and shining beautifully under the sunlight.

One of the best parts of the Thatharna viewpoint is its 360-degree panoramic view of Dharamshala and the surrounding valleys.

We spent nearly two hours enjoying the scenery, taking photographs, and doing some fun acrobatics while capturing the beauty of the mountains.

Tea, Maggi and an Inspiring Story

Near the top, there is a small tea shop and camping site where trekkers can rest and enjoy some refreshments.

Here we met Anil Sharma, a hardworking young man with an incredible story. He told us that he had carried a 2-ton generator in parts on his back to help set up the café at the top.

His dedication and strength were truly inspiring.

We enjoyed hot Maggi( @ Rs 120) and tea while chatting with him and soaking in the beautiful mountain atmosphere.

Since it was the festival of Holi, we also spent some time celebrating and playing colors with fellow trekkers.

Descending the Trek

Around 5 PM, we started our descent.

The downhill trek was smooth and relaxing, and we reached back at Kharota village by around 6:15 PM.

Camping at Thatharna

If you want to spend the night in the mountains, camping facilities are available at the top.

The campsite provides:

  • Comfortable beds and tents
  • Clean toilet facilities
  • Dinner, breakfast, and tea

Camping and Guide Facilities

The camping cost is approximately ₹1500 per person, which is quite reasonable considering the stunning location and panoramic mountain views. The package generally includes comfortable stay arrangements, basic facilities, and meals such as dinner, breakfast, and tea.

Local guides and campsite owners like Mr. Anuj, Mr. Malik, and Mr. Sushil are known for their hospitality and can help arrange camping, food, and guidance for trekkers visiting Thatharna.
